JES FAST FACTS, 2007-08

COMING & GOING (See pages 27 to 30 of the Student Handbook for full details.)

> If your child will be ABSENT, please call 635-2211 and leave a message on ext. 5.

> At 7:30, the school is opened and staff come on duty to supervise students. Students should arrive at school after 7:30. (If you need to deliver an item that can't be carried on the bus, a staff member is at the main door from 7:10 to 7:30 to accept the delivery; in this case only, your child may wait in the lobby until 7:30.)

> Classes begin promptly at 7:50. Students should arrive at school before 7:50.

> Students arriving after 7:50 must report to the office and get a pass to enter their class.

> If you drop students off in the morning before 7:50, please use the drop off area on School Street. A staff member is stationed there to greet children. If you drop off after 7:50, you must drop off at the main entrance, "behind" the school.

> If you wish or need to accompany your child into school in the morning, it is best if you park on School Street and walk in the South Porch door. THE SOUTH PORCH DOOR IS OPEN UNTIL 7:50; after this, students must enter through the main north door.

> At the start of the school year, you must designate a regular end-of-day plan for your child (for example, bus home, bus to daycare, walk, picked up.) You will need to send a written note to school with the child authorizing any change from the regular plan. This includes cases in which a child goes to different destinations on a regular schedule: the child may leave school under only one plan without a note. You may send in a week's worth of notes at a time, but please send in a separate note for each day, with the date, child's name and destination clearly identified. Please DO NOT CALL to change end-of-day arrangements unless it is an emergency.

> School dismisses at 2:40. If you pick up your child at school, please park on School Street and meet in the "South Porch" area of the building, PROMPTLY AT 2:40.

> If you drive into the parking lot behind the building by the main entrance, DO NOT PASS THE BUSSES AND DO NOT BLOCK THE FIRE LANE; THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY REQUIREMENT.

MEALS & SNACKS (See pages 33 - 34 of the Student Handbook for full details.)

NOTE CHANGES IN LUNCH/RECESS SCHEDULE NEW THIS YEAR!

> Breakfast is served from 7:30 to 7:50. Lunch is staggered: Sparkles start lunch at 11:15; Detectives at 11:45; Green Mountaineers at 12:45; Explorers at 12:15. Recess is right before lunch, except for Explorers, who have recess after lunch. Due to their later lunch, Green Mountaineers have a morning snack built into their schedule.

> Students may bring a snack to eat during their mid-morning break.

> Snack milk or juice may be purchased for $.40. Snack drinks are NOT part of the free/reduced meal program. This year, snack drink 20-punch cards will be sold for $8.00, and must be paid for separately from breakfast/lunch. (See the Student Handbook and "Forms Packet" for details.)

> Please send in payments for both snack drink and regular breakfast/lunch on Mondays.

> Full prices are: breakfast $.85; lunch $1.75; at breakfast/lunch, milk $.40, juice $.25 - $.75

> Details about paying for breakfast/lunch are included in the Student Handbook attachments.

> National School Breakfast/Lunch Program applications and instructions are in the Forms Packet. The majority of Johnson households are eligible. (For example, a family of four with an annual income of about $38,000 is eligible for reduced prices.) Not only are savings substantial, but other funding for our school is determined by how many students are eligible for the program, even if they never buy meals. We encourage you to apply!

HOMEWORK, REPORT CARDS, & PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES

> Basic homework policies are outlined on page 15 of the Student Handbook.

> JES students receive three formal report cards per year, in November, March and June. Students receive progress reports mid-term. (See pages 15-17 of the Student Handbook).

> Parent/teacher conferences are scheduled for October and as necessary during the rest of the school year . We encourage you to call your child's teacher any time during the year to ask a question or arrange a conference. A list of JES telephone extensions is attached to the Student Handbook.
